July 2024 Newsletter

We are still in the middle of summer and we hope you are continuing to enjoy the combination of free time, managing the kids, going on trips, sleeping a little later, and not driving all over the city. We want to touch on a few important things that we have covered before, but still think are important as the summer starts to wind down.

Calendar

Intentionally work on your calendar for each week between now and the end of the summer. Invite your children’s input.

  • What do they still want to do or see?
  • What remains to be accomplished like reading from the reading list or doing math packets?
  • Schedule all doctor’s appointments
  • Make plans to see friends
  • Any remaining travel plans?
  • Review your fall sports and activity schedules. Will there be unstructured time for your children this fall?
  • Tutors or specialists called and scheduled
  • Organize house management chores and give your children updated responsibilities

Reading

If you have not found time to read as a family, build in the reading time at least once a week. Everyone reads including the youngest and oldest members of the family. Be sure the kids have read from their assigned reading lists. Have your child complete any written assignments so they can be reviewed before school starts.

Class lists

Class lists may have been posted. It would be really nice if your family would invite a new person in your class over or meet for ice cream before the summer ends. New students often feel left out at the beginning of school.

Giveaway Day

Be sure you take the time for a ‘give-a-way day’ Give toys, books, and clothes to those in need. Have each child find at least 4 things he/she does not use or wear including books. Then go together with your children to a shelter or a thrift store and donate. It is not too early to teach ‘the art of giving.’

Technology

Before school starts, have a family technology meeting. We are seeing more and more data addressing the importance of minimizing device use. Schools will be implementing new policies as well. It would be better if you had your thoughts ready about how everyone needs to play a significant role in decreasing the use of the device. We have seen increased anxiety, decreased socialization, increased ADHD and lack of focus which lowers executive functioning ability.

Time to think

Take a minute to think about the increased pace of the school year. If you are thinking of exploring another school, if you want us to analyze past report cards, if you think you may need a therapist or educational testing, we are here to help you. We believe in you and trust your instincts, but talking through your concerns early will help you start the year right. Please email or call us and we will make time for you because we care about families.

Valued Friends

We believe friendships to be so important. As our world gets even more complicated and divided, we are reminded of the strength of friendships.

Take a moment to reach out to a friend you care about.

Remember:

  • Friends don’t need an explanation
  • Friends become family
  • Friends help one another, even when inconvenient
  • Friends understand and can engage even when opinions differ
  • Friends support your ups and downs
  • Friends give purpose
